Red told us about the Challenge a dozen Freethinker meetups ago, and it's been at the back of my mind ever since. I've told a bunch of friends about it, but never really thought to write about it until last week's Conversations with a Cause, where the magnificent James Randi talks about the Challenge himself, and about his experiences with the many people who've gunned for it:
The log of applicants shows mostly clairvoyants and psychics -- people who claim to be able to detect physical illnesses through psychic powers, act as mediums for the dead, heal people with energy, and the like. There's even one entry for "paranormal urination" (!!), and one for "X-ray Eyes".
Have you had any paranormal experiences lately? Think you can rise to the challenge of proving that the occult exists? Is homeopathy the answer to everything? You just might want to apply for the Challenge! The process is fairly simple:
- Applicant must fill out the application form and send it out to the JREF headquarters in Los Angeles, CA.
- Applicants with complete applications will be contacted for preliminary testing.
- Applicants who pass the preliminary tests will be invited to the JREF headquarters for formal testing.
Apparently, nobody's passed the preliminary tests. You'd think that with all of these clairvoyants making money in sideshows and in little villages with talking Mama Mary and Sto. Niño statues, somebody would've at least made it through to formal testing, but noooo.
